Thank you for all the generous gifts I received during the last few days of school. More importantly, thank you for being supportive of my work with your children and for supporting them at home. Second graders gain a lot of independence and allowing them to take responsibility for their learning is so important.
You probably noticed I sent work home on Thursday and Friday. Tomorrow I will send home the progress reports. If your child does not attend it will be mailed.
The work I sent home Thursday includes writing and activities they did in math and social studies. Some work could continue. Especially, in regards to the science journals, social studies folder and writing. They can continue to add wonderings and new learning in science and add to their social studies passports as they learn and travel. They could revise or add to the writing they did. Their journals are a good resource for continuing reading response. We worked a lot on understanding the author's message and recording information and new questions when we read non-ficton.
Friday, I sent home their math workbook. Part way through the year I stopped sending home pages because they often use past work to help them develop new ideas. There are plenty of pages to continue to work on over the summer and have conversations with you about how they solve problems in multiple ways. They also have access to the on-line games.
On Friday, I also sent home the Stay Sharp Summer folder. It has ideas for getting ready for third grade and a letter from Mr. Hanna. I also added a folder of assessments I used each term to reflect on their work. The students also, used the writing rubrics to reflect on their work. They got their own copy of the fundations assessment to reflect on. They were given opportunities to work with me and redo work on the math assessments. This folder is just a sampling of their work. Progress reports are also based on classroom observations and interactions with me and their peers. The ability to reflect on mistakes in a positive way was a life long learning goal we worked on together all year.
Students will continue to have access to Raz-kids and SpellVocab City over the summer. Their log in info is in the blue Fundations folder. This folder is also a resource for practicing spelling using what the students learned about the different syllable types. They will also be able to access our class page for science. The user name and password are the same for these, stratton7.
Feel free to contact me anytime. I am happy to support your child or answer questions as they go forward in their learning adventure.
I hope you have a wonderful summer of learning and exploring!
